Iranian ‘Slaughter’ to vie at MENA filmfest

Iranian short ‘Slaughter’ is to go to the 2020 MENA Film Festival in Canada.

Iranian short film ‘Slaughter’ has been selected to compete at the 2nd edition of the MENA Film Festival in Canada.

Co-directed by Ako Zand-Karimi and Saman Hosseinpour, the 13-minute flick narrates the story of a family that has to sell its only cow to live through a tough winter.

The family’s son, however, is not happy with the deal, so he lets the cow escape.

The film has so far attended a number of global events, including the Early Bird International Student Film Festival in Bulgaria, the Third Eye Asian Film Festival in India, the Threadbare Mitten Film Festival in the US, and the Mareta Film Festival in Italy, where it won the Best Short Film Award.

It won the Jury Prize at the Rural Short Film Competition (Mostremp) in Spain as well as the best screenplay award at the Parma Music Film Festival in Italy.

‘Slaughter’ was also announced as the Audience Choice at the Fredonia Film Festival in the US and fetched Fereydoun Hamedi the Best Actor award at the International University Festival Cine-Literature of Agadir in Morocco.

As stated on the MENA Film Festival’s official website “it aims to provide a stage for emerging artists and new voices to share their work, open a space for dialogue and celebrate our place in the Canadian media landscape”.

The festival is slated for November 20-27 and the short film ‘Slaughter’ will be screened on November 21, 2020.
